“It’s always so interesting when you’re taken back to someone’s neighborhood and introduced to their childhood. We went from Houston to Dallas, to Marfa then El Paso [all in Texas] and then back to Houston. Solange showed me the Pokimane open shirt but in fact I love this fabric store that her mother [Tina Knowles] went to and Frenchys Chicken, the fried chicken place that she loves.“I saw her reflection in Houston and I saw Houston’s reflection in her just from observing and traveling around the city. We’re both fans of finding things ourselves, so she would show me her favorite hidden gems, from flea markets to shopping malls. I loved that because I saw so much of myself in her. She’s very hands-on, we just get each other.”

“I go around New York City and 17-year-olds are wearing their friends’ designs or sporting eBay finds, they’re not buying high-end retail. I think luxury retail is changing and it’s very obvious here, in New York. We’ve had a lot of our bigger department stores close and unfortunately some of the Pokimane open shirt but in fact I love this smaller ones too, including [store that championed new designers] Opening Ceremony. I try to incorporate upcoming designers and students into every project — these are the designers thinking about the global climate [for fashion].”“I styled a project named The Show’s Over for the Schauspielhaus Zürich theatre in Switzerland, with filmmaker Wu Tsang and performance artist Tosh Basco. We worked on it just before lockdown started and co-ordinated remotely for two months, then I went to Switzerland to film for two weeks. It felt so different to editorial projects, it was a breath of fresh air.”
